How many beers are in a keg? What size keg do do i need for my event?

Barrel & Keg sells two sizes of kegs. Small: 1/6 & 1/4 otherwise known as a pony kegs = about 40-60 pints.  Large:  ½ barrel keg or 50Liter = about 125 pints. (1/2 is the largest size keg available on the market, there is no such thing as a 1 barrel)
Select producers offer a 1/4 size barrel= 7.5 gallons as their pony keg option. It is rare for a brewery to offer all 3 sizes. Each brewery produces and kegs beer in the size kegs they determine. For example Some producers will only offer 1/4 size barrel and others may only offer 1/2 size. We are unable to request a specific size barrel, what they offer is what we have to choose from. This becomes more of a issue for home kegerator clients and hired bartending trailers that can only accommodate certain size kegs.

Barrel and keg does not like to make recommendations on the quantity of beer/ cider and wine you will need for your event. You know your guests better than we do. But we can tell you a full size keg has 1984 oz =125 beers
pony kegs 672 oz =40 beers
The typical keg of beer/cider runs .10 cents per oz while caned package beer runs closer to .14 cents per oz. Kegs are definitely more budget friendly!

Wine kegs are only offered in 5 gallon pony size 672 oz =112 glasses of wine = 28 bottles of wine. Wine can not be served on cO2! Nitrogen or Argon gas is recommended for the service of wine.

Do I have to keep the kegs cold at all times?
In short yes. Beer cider and wine producers recommend that kegs stay cold to preserve the freshness and flavor of their products. Does that mean they have to be at 36 degrees continuously? NO, but we would not recommend a temperature fluctuation of more that 15 degrees. Our storage coolers are kept at 50.
Keeping your brews cold will assist with serving and allow you to get the most bank for your buck in liquid. The biggest culprit of foam is a beer that is not cold enough. If you need to store the kegs overnight - throw a few bags of ice on it and keep it out of the suns heat. Start icing the kegs down and replenishing ice often as least 6 hours prior to service. Ideally beer should be served at 34-40.
Will my beer be ruined if i let it heat up? Possibly! depending on the beer. Keep in mind beer is a live product. Exposing a light beer for example, is made with few ingredients to start so flavors noticeably change when exposed to temperature fluxuations. Have you ever heard of a “skunked” beer? The beer wasn’t kept cold.
However hardier beers like Guinness for example can handle temperature fluxuations and the taste is not as easily affected.
